Handong Global University has been producing satisfactory results in the area of international development cooperation projects for the empowerment of developing countries under the UNITWIN program for the last decade. It has been providing the higher education opportunities to universities and institutions of developing countries. One opportunity is having a dual-degree program with a university of a developing country, and holding entrepreneurship training, empowering workshops and start-up empowerment camps.

From 2020, as the corresponding action to the New Southern Policy of the Korean government, HGU has been focusing on start-up empowerment of entrepreneurs, university students, and young adults in ASEAN countries by establishing HGU-ASEAN Techno-Business Innovation Centres in Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar. These centres support them by helping discover business items and establishing businesses.

Regarding the international development cooperation project of HGU, Ban Ki-moon, Former UN Secretary-General, recognised it by saying, "I hope Handong Global University may continuously care for the issues and be the pioneer that embodies the UN spirit." He emphasised the importance of the responsibility of having a mindset of a world citizen to achieve the UN SDGs and its education.

HGU will make every effort to assist achieving self-sustainability in the area of economic development and the development of local societies through the Africa / Developing Countries Project.

HGU has been selected as the leading university of the UNESCO UNITWIN Program in 2008 and signed the "Intern Dispatchment Agreement" with OECD as the first university in Korea. HGU was also selected as the UNAI Global Hub Centre in Higher Education Capacity Building Field in November 2010, which was led by Ban, Ki-moon, the former UN secretary-general, and sustained the status for 10 consecutive years. The school has been established as a university that contributes to the area of cooperation in an international society. Currently, HGU has been selected as one of 10 Global Hub Centres among 1,200 UNAI member universities, and established the UNAI Ban Ki-Moon Institute for Global Education (IGE) on campus.
