The UNESCO UNITWIN Project Team of Handong Global University (President Dosoung Choi) hosted the ‘Symposium on International Development Cooperation’ on October 11, 2022. Students from the Handong Graduate School of Global Development & Entrepreneurship presented their master’s theses for the public before their final evaluation later this month.

Handong Global University agreed in April of 2015 to work with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) as it invites students from Asia, Africa, and the Latin America to train them as global leaders in their countries, equipped with electronic, ICT convergence and entrepreneurship knowledge. They are also expected to serve as bridges between their home countries and Korea for future cooperation. Since the program started in 2018, the graduate school has recruited government employees and researchers, equipping them with balanced problem-solving capabilities in both theory and field-based study, while supporting them financially during their stay in Korea.

Fourteen students presented their theses during the symposium before a panel of judges comprising of ten professors from the Humanities & Social Science Department and the Engineering & Arts Department of HGU. They explained how they reached their results which could alleviate specific social issues. The students demonstrated the logic they applied after thorough research and experiments. These methods will be continually developed and verified to be useful in both developed and underdeveloped countries.

Ms. Bernice Narh expressed her gratitude to her professors who pushed her to obtain the best results as well as encouraged her. She researched and developed a thesis on how ‘Block Chain Technology’ can reduce fraud in claiming a health insurance in Ghana. Mr. Sotheara Chaay studied a different area in an undergraduate course, but said that the past one and half year of study in Korea will be helpful in a Cambodian context when he resumes his career in a government ministry. He studied the customers’ pattern constructed with the Machine Learning Technology for his final paper, while expanding his insights with knowledge about ICT policies and the history of international development.

At the opening ceremony, Dean Kiseok Kim (Graduate School of Global Development & Entrepreneurship) delivered the welcoming remarks, expressing his pleasure that the school will soon be graduating its 10th alumni cohort and emphasized the importance of learning how to present one’s thesis while listening to others’ opinions. The presenters defended their theses, answering sharp questions, while humbly accepting advice from the discussants.

* UNITWIN (University Twinning and Networking) was established by UNESCO in 1992 with the aim of helping universities in developed countries support education and research institutes in developing countries through forming networks between universities and thereby reducing knowledge gaps and nurturing self-reliance in developing countries. In South Korea, Handong University was designated as the first UNITWIN host university in 2007.

* As part of the Ministry of Education's ODA program, Handong Global University has signed agreements with universities in developing countries, centering on the government's key partners, among the low-income countries classified by the World Bank, to strengthen each university’s capacity, and has established a regional base in developing countries.
